His work often combines seemingly spontaneous lines with carefully balanced colors and textures, creating compositions that blur the boundaries between writing, drawing, and painting. In Ferragosto III, delicate marks interact with bold strokes and areas of layered pigment, reflecting Twombly's experimental approach to modern art.

The artwork belongs to Twombly's Ferragosto series, created in Rome in 1961. The title refers to Ferragosto, an Italian summer holiday traditionally celebrated in August. The series demonstrates Twombly's fascination with gesture, color, and the emotional possibilities of abstract painting.
