This vibrant composition features sweeping vertical strokes, spontaneous lines, and dramatic paint drips in bright yellow, golden ochre, red, orange, and muted pink. The pale background creates a striking contrast with the intense pigments, while overlapping gestures and layered textures give the artwork a sense of movement, rhythm, and visual depth.

Cy Twombly was an influential American artist known for his distinctive approach to abstract expressionism, gestural painting, expressive drawing, and experimental mark-making. His paintings often combine spontaneous gestures, unconventional textures, and bold colors to explore the relationship between art, history, and human experience. In Lepanto, Part I, energetic strokes and dripping pigments create an expressive visual language that conveys movement and intensity without relying on realistic representation.

The artwork forms part of Twombly's twelve-part Lepanto cycle, created in 2001 and first exhibited at the Venice Biennale. The series was inspired by the Battle of Lepanto, a major naval conflict fought on October 7, 1571, between the Holy League and the Ottoman fleet. Twombly transforms this historical event into a dramatic sequence of abstract paintings, using vivid colors and dynamic marks to evoke the movement of battle, the force of the sea, and the intensity of fire. The first panel introduces the expressive energy that characterizes the cycle.

This Lepanto, Part I by Cy Twombly canvas print offers a distinctive way to display contemporary abstract art in your interior.
