Created in 1984, this evocative composition features a vibrant cluster of red, crimson, pink, and burgundy marks against a pale background. A slender green stem extends beneath the colorful form, while energetic brushstrokes and loosely drawn lines create a sense of movement and organic transformation. Subtle yellow accents and layered textures add further visual depth to the composition.

Cy Twombly developed a distinctive artistic language that combines abstract painting, gestural drawing, calligraphic marks, and references to classical mythology. His work explores the expressive potential of spontaneous lines, layered color, and forms that move between representation and abstraction. In Proteus, the flower-like composition demonstrates how recognizable natural shapes can become something more ambiguous and expressive through the artist's distinctive approach to mark-making.

The title Proteus evokes the shape-shifting figure of ancient Greek mythology, associated with the sea and transformation. This connection offers a compelling way to consider the artwork's fluid forms and changing visual textures. Rather than presenting a literal mythological scene, Twombly creates an expressive composition that encourages viewers to interpret the relationship between nature, imagination, and abstract expression in their own way.

This Proteus by Cy Twombly canvas print offers a distinctive way to display contemporary abstract art in your interior.
