Known as the opening panel of Twombly's nine-part Green Paintings series, this contemplative composition features a pale, almost white surface, delicate handwritten inscriptions, and dark green brushwork framing the edges. The central space remains largely open, allowing the fine cursive lines and subtle marks to create a quiet visual rhythm. This contrast between expressive gestures and negative space gives the artwork its distinctive atmosphere.

The painting belongs to a nine-panel series that Twombly developed in Rome in 1988. The series explores light, reflections, and the sensation of looking at water through variations of green, white, and other subtle tones. The first panel is especially notable for its poetic inscription, drawn from Rainer Maria Rilke's poem Moving Forward. The words refer to ponds, the sky, and the sensation of sinking while standing on fishes, connecting the artwork with ideas of water, perception, memory, and emotional depth.

Cy Twombly was an influential American artist known for combining abstract painting, gestural drawing, calligraphic marks, and references to poetry and classical literature. His distinctive approach blurs the boundaries between writing and visual art, transforming handwritten words and spontaneous marks into expressive elements. In Untitled (A Painting in Nine Parts), Part I, the contrast between the pale central field and the dark green edges evokes the shifting appearance of water and reflected vegetation without depicting a conventional landscape.

This Cy Twombly poster offers an elegant way to introduce contemporary abstract art into your home.
