Cold Stream by Cy Twombly Poster

Cold Stream by Cy Twombly – Abstract Art Poster

Discover Cold Stream by Cy Twombly, a striking work of modern abstract art created in 1966. This monochromatic composition features repeated horizontal bands of overlapping white and gray loops across a deep charcoal-gray background. The energetic, elliptical scribbles vary in size, density, and direction, creating a compelling visual rhythm that moves across the canvas. Their repeated gestures evoke the continuous movement of flowing water while emphasizing the expressive possibilities of line, repetition, and spontaneous drawing.

Cy Twombly was an influential American artist known for his distinctive approach to abstract expression, gestural painting, calligraphic marks, and expressive scribbles. His artistic language often explores the relationship between writing, drawing, and painting, transforming repeated marks into visual expressions rather than conventional readable text. In Cold Stream, delicate white wax-pencil lines contrast with the dark background, producing a composition that resembles spontaneous handwriting on a blackboard.

Created during Twombly's celebrated period of monochromatic paintings, Cold Stream emphasizes the act of mark-making itself. The repeated loops form several horizontal rows, combining a sense of rhythm and order with irregular gestures that preserve the spontaneity of the artist's hand. The limited palette places the focus on texture, movement, and the relationship between the individual marks and the dark surface.
