Ferragosto V by Cy Twombly – Abstract Art Poster

Discover Ferragosto V by Cy Twombly, a powerful work of modern abstract art created in Rome in 1961. This expressive composition features energetic brushstrokes, spontaneous scribbles, and layered textures in warm shades of red, rust, orange, brown, black, cream, and pale yellow. Bold sweeping marks interact with delicate pencil-like lines and overlapping gestures, creating a dynamic sense of movement and visual intensity across the canvas. The combination of earthy colors and expressive textures gives this artwork a distinctive presence in contemporary art collections.

Cy Twombly was an influential American artist celebrated for his unique approach to abstract expression, gestural painting, calligraphic drawing, and expressive mark-making. His distinctive artistic language often combines spontaneous-looking lines with layered pigments, creating compositions that explore the relationship between movement, emotion, memory, and visual expression. In Ferragosto V, energetic strokes and intricate marks overlap to produce a composition that feels immediate, physical, and full of expressive energy.

The painting belongs to Twombly's Ferragosto series, created in Rome in 1961. Named after the traditional Italian summer holiday celebrated in August, the series reflects the artist's response to the intense atmosphere of summer in Rome. Rather than depicting a recognizable landscape or everyday scene, Twombly uses gestural brushwork, spontaneous lines, and contrasting colors to communicate sensation and movement. The layered red and brown marks of Ferragosto V evoke warmth, intensity, and the restless energy of an urban summer.
