Fifty Days at Iliam: Ilians in Battle by Cy Twombly – Abstract Art Poster

Discover Fifty Days at Iliam: Ilians in Battle by Cy Twombly, an expressive work of modern abstract art created in 1978. This striking composition combines energetic red brushstrokes, delicate graphite-like lines, handwritten words, and layered marks in shades of blue, brown, black, and muted pink against a warm, pale background. The overlapping gestures create a sense of movement and tension, transforming the canvas into an expressive interpretation of conflict, history, and human emotion.

Cy Twombly was an influential American artist known for blending abstract expressionism, gestural drawing, calligraphic marks, and references to classical mythology and literature. His distinctive artistic language combines spontaneous-looking scribbles with carefully developed compositions, allowing words, symbols, and expressive lines to become part of the artwork itself. In Ilians in Battle, recognizable names and fragments of writing interact with energetic brushstrokes, creating a dynamic visual narrative without depicting the battle in a conventional way.

This painting forms part of Twombly's celebrated Fifty Days at Iliam series, a ten-part cycle inspired by Homer's Iliad, in Alexander Pope's translation. Completed in 1978, the series explores episodes from the Trojan War through the artist's distinctive combination of writing, abstraction, and expressive color. The imagery in Ilians in Battle evokes the conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans, while its layered marks invite viewers to explore the relationship between ancient storytelling and contemporary abstract art.
