Fifty Days at Iliam: Shield of Achilles by Cy Twombly Poster

Shield of Achilles by Cy Twombly – Abstract Art Poster

Discover Fifty Days at Iliam: Shield of Achilles by Cy Twombly, a powerful example of expressive abstract art created in 1978. The composition features a dynamic circular arrangement of red, blue, black, and muted gray marks against a warm, off-white background. Layered scribbles, sweeping lines, and energetic gestures form a dense central shape that evokes movement, intensity, and the visual rhythm of classical epic storytelling.

The artwork belongs to Twombly's celebrated Fifty Days at Iliam series, a ten-part painting cycle inspired by the Trojan War as described in Homer's Iliad. The Shield of Achilles refers to the legendary shield fashioned by the god Hephaestus for the Greek hero Achilles. Rather than depicting the myth literally, Twombly uses spontaneous-looking marks, expressive colors, and overlapping lines to create an abstract interpretation of classical mythology. His distinctive visual language connects ancient literature with the experimentation of modern art.

This Shield of Achilles by Cy Twombly poster offers a distinctive way to bring contemporary abstract art and classical inspiration into your home. The contrast between the concentrated circular composition and the surrounding open space makes it an eye-catching addition to living rooms, bedrooms, home offices, studios, and creative interiors.
