Cy Twombly was an influential American artist renowned for his experimental approach to Abstract Expressionism, gestural painting, expressive drawing, and unconventional mark-making. His work frequently explores the connections between classical mythology, ancient history, literature, poetry, and human emotion. By combining spontaneous gestures, handwritten inscriptions, and layered pigments, Twombly developed a distinctive artistic language that bridges painting and writing. His innovative approach continues to inspire admirers of modern abstract art who appreciate expressive compositions, literary references, and the emotional possibilities of color and texture.

Created in Rome in 1985, Hero and Leander (To Christopher Marlowe) [Rome] draws inspiration from the tragic Greek myth of Hero and Leander, a story of love, longing, and loss immortalized in Christopher Marlowe's poem Hero and Leander. Rather than illustrating the narrative literally, Twombly translates its emotional atmosphere into an abstract visual language. Delicate pink and red marks emerge from a pale, almost luminous background, while darker gestures introduce dramatic contrasts across the composition. The layered brushwork and flowing forms evoke a sense of movement and vulnerability, inviting viewers to interpret the relationship between the artwork's expressive marks and its literary inspiration.
